Spices Learning Model in Maximizing the Students’ Writing Skill

Abstract

This article shed light on one learning model to solve the students’ problem in writing, namely SPICES learning model. The SPICES model was introduced for the first by Harden in 1984 in the field of health. The name SPICES is acronym of Student-centered, Problem-based, Integrated, Community-based, Elective, and Systematic. The SPICES model derived from theory of constructivism. Fosnot (2005) elucidated that constructivism is a theory about knowledge and learning; it describes both what “knowing” is and how one “comes to know.” Constructivism theory explained that learning is the result of activity and self-organization and proceeds toward the development of structures. This research is aimed at finding out: (1) whether or not applying SPICES learning model significantly maximize the writing skill of the second semester students of Madrasah Aliyah Lil Banat Parepare, (2) the attitude of the students toward the use of SPICES learning model. Related to the aims of the research, a quasi-experimental method was carried out. The subject of the research was 20 students of of Madrasah Aliyah Lilbanat Parepare . The instruments for collecting data were writing test and questionnaire. The data obtained through the test were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.The result of the study shows that the use of SPICES learning model significantly maximize the students’ writing skill. Besides, the research finding also shows that the students have positive attitude toward the use of SPICES learning model.

Biography

(402) Siti Hajar LarekengSiti Hajar Larekeng is a lecturer of English at Muhammadiyah University of Parepare, Indonesia. She received her bachelor Degree  at Universitas Hasanudddin Makassar, in 1999,  Master Degree in English Language Study from Universitas Hasanuddin in 2008 and,  now she is enrolled as a doctorate student of Linguistics Study at Universitas Hasanuddin Makassar.  Her research interests include TEFL, teaching media, and technology in education.

Aryanti Tajuddin is a teacher of English at SMP Negeri 13 Parepare, Indonesia. She received her bachelor Degree  at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare, in 2005,  Master Degree in English Language Study from Universitas in Muhammadiyah Parepare  in 2015 and.  Her research interests include TEFL, and teaching media.
