The Effect of Asset Based Thinking (ABT) Method on the Students’ Speaking Ability in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) Classroom

Abstract

As a foreign language, English is always challenging to students and teachers. Students find that learning English is difficult and frightening. As a professional, teacher/ lecturer should find the best strategies or methods in encouraging students’ ability and motivation in learning. Based on the observation during the teaching and learning process, it was found that students are less confident to practice their speaking ability and students have low motivation in practicing their English speaking ability.  In this presentation, the presenter will show you a new method in motivating, and encouraging the students to improve their English speaking ability by using Asset Based Thinking (ABT) method integrated with Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) classroom. She will tell you how and why ABT method integrated with CLT classroom change the students’ way of view English language (from difficult to become interesting). ABT Method is a method which focuses on how the teacher or lecturer motivated the students to find their strengths (potentials, skills, knowledge and abilities) and how they use the strength as an asset in reaching their target of learning. Meanwhile, CLT is one of an appropriate approach in teaching speaking as it emphasized on the students’ communicative ability, which is conducted through discussion, simulation, role-play. Through the combination of the method and approach, it was proven that the students’ motivation in improving their speaking ability was increased

Biography

(406) Sulistia IndahMy name is Sulistia Indah. I was born in Bima, 22nd November 1982. I finished my first grade at English Department of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta in 2006. In 2015, I finished my master Degree in Magister of English Education Department of Mataram University. Now I am a lecturer in STKIP Bima, Indonesia.
